A Love Supreme – Elmhurst Toyota Dealer

The Elmhurst Art Museum is hosting an exhibition titled A Love Supreme, inspired by legendary jazz musician John Coltrane. This solo exhibition by Norman Teague is set to run through April 28, 2024. It’s not just an exhibition but a celebration of BIPOC designers and a variety of cultural influences in Chicago, especially at a time when the country is reckoning with racial inequities in representation across various industries and disciplines. A Love SupremeThe exhibition unfolds in two parts. In the main galleries, Teague presents new works with African-influenced objects. The highlight of this section is Teague’s version of a large-scale African round house, containing multiple organically designed objects that pay homage to his Midwest influences. These include the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the Wall of Respect, and sculptor Martin Puryear.

A Love Supreme also transforms the McCormick House from a symbol of upper-class, white suburban living into a space that celebrates alternative aesthetics. This section includes works by more than 30 BIPOC architects, designers, and artists. These include furniture, blown glass, and custom leather pieces. Teague poses a reflective question in this space: “What is your Coltrane story? Who awakened you personally and artistically?”

Teague draws upon his and other creatives’ history and cultural inspirations throughout the exhibition, which pays homage to figures such as Chuck Harrison, Martin Puryear, and Emory Douglas. It also acknowledges the empowering musical legacy of the Civil Rights Era and the overlooked historical BIPOC figures, creating an opportunity for today’s generation to recognize and reclaim the historical absence of Black design history in America.

To enhance your experience, the exhibition includes audio components. It’s recommended that visitors bring their headphones and smartphones to engage fully with these aspects of the exhibition. This multimedia approach provides a richer, more immersive experience, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the themes and influences of the exhibition.

A Love Supreme is part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art. The exhibition is also sponsored by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and supported in part by a grant from the League of Chicago Theatres and ComEd. It’s co-curated by Norman Teague and Rose Camara in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation.
