Burn Calories for a Cause at Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot – Elmhurst Toyota Dealer

November 15th, 2017 by

Before you indulge in a hearty Thanksgiving feast on Thursday, Nov. 23, come out and burn off some calories at the 34th Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot. The 5K fun run for individuals, groups and families begins at 9 a.m. Not only will you have fun and get a workout, you can also feel good knowing that you’re helping the hungry here in DuPage County. All of us at Elmhurst Toyota look forward to this annual tradition, which has provided close to 4 million meals for those in need over the years since the race began.

Dan Gibbons Turkey TrotThe idea for the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot started back in 1983. That’s when Dan heard WGN radio personality Ed Schwartz report that $300,000 would be spent on New Year’s Eve fireworks by the city of Chicago—money that would go a long way toward providing food for the city’s hungry. Dan knew that DuPage County also had citizens who struggled with hunger, so he began volunteering in Schwartz’s Good Neighbor Food Drive.

Inspired by a desire to do even more, Dan and some friends decided to start a 5K race with the purpose of providing needy families with food during the holiday season. In 1984, the first year of the race, 74 runners participated and the event raised $520. Since then, the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot has become an annual tradition in Elmhurst and has raised over $3.5 million, all used to fight hunger in DuPage County.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so please register soon if you want to participate. Even if you’re not a runner, this is a fun event where you can cheer on your friends and neighbors.
