Choro music, often called “the New Orleans jazz of Brazil,” is an instrumental genre characterized by virtuosity, improvisation, and subtle, syncopated rhythms. Born in the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro, Choro blends elements of European classical music with African rhythms and indigenous melodies. With its lively, upbeat tempo and intricate harmonies, Choro embodies the spirit of Brazilian culture, evoking images of community, celebration, and a deeply rooted love for music.

Prior to the Choro Concert, musicians from York Community High School and Elmhurst University will be immersed in a week of hands-on learning. Under the expert instruction of Julie Koidin, Vitor Gonçalves, and Dedé Sampaio, students will have the unique opportunity to study and play Choro music. This week of cultural immersion will culminate in the concert at York High School, where the vibrant sounds of Brazilian Jazz will fill the summer air.
