Day of the Dead Celebration

There’s no better way to observe the Día de Los Muertos than to visit the Elmhurst History Museum for the Day of the Dead Celebration. This program takes place on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 6-9 p.m. Members of Immigrant Solidarity DuPage will be on hand to help participants celebrate this ancient Mexican tradition. Attendees will learn about the holiday’s symbols and traditions, accompanied by pre-Hispanic music and mariachi musicians. Here at McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we’re proud of the many programs the Elmhurst History Museum provides. We hope you’ll be on hand to usher in the observance of this holiday.

The fun continues with a catrinas procession around the museum with mariachis at 8:45 p.m. Wear a traditional Day of the Dead costume and participate in the craft activities and face painting offered in the Education Center. While you’re at the museum, take advantage of the exhibits, which will be open for viewing during the event.

The Day of the Dead is traditionally celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2. However, it may be observed on Oct. 31 or Nov. 6 in some locations. The holiday originated in Mexico and is celebrated there and in other places by people of Mexican Heritage. As opposed to Western Christian holidays associated with the Day of the Dead, such as All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day, it’s considered a joyful holiday rather than one of mourning. Family and friends gather to remember loved ones who have died, often with humorous anecdotes about the deceased. The celebration isn’t only focused on the dead; it’s common for family and friends to give gifts, including candy sugar skulls and traditional pan de muerto.
