The Elmhurst History Museum presents its latest exhibit, Lost Chicagoland Department Stores, scheduled to open its doors on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at 1 p.m. This unique exhibition pays homage to the golden era of Chicago area department stores such as Marshall Field & Co., Carson Pirie Scott, and many more. As the holiday season approaches, what better way to reminisce about the bygone days of bustling department stores filled with holiday shoppers and decorative window displays? At Elmhurst Toyota, we appreciate the many educational and entertaining exhibitions the Elmhurst History Museum offers our community.

Lost Chicagoland Department StoresCurated in collaboration with historian and renowned author Leslie Goddard, known for her books such as “Remembering Marshall Field’s” and “Lost Chicago Department Stores,” this exhibit boasts a rich collection of artifacts, photographs, videos, and interactive displays. The journey begins in the late 1800s, tracing the evolution of the retail industry and its iconic brick-and-mortar stores. Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • Marshall Field & Co.’s 2004 Snow White animatronic holiday window characters.
  • Fashion displays from stalwarts like Sears, Marshall Field & Co., Carson Pirie Scott, and Montgomery Ward.
  • Unique holiday memorabilia from Uncle Mistletoe, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and many more.
  • Engaging interactive displays, including an insightful video interview with Marshall Field V and a vintage hat try-on station.
  • An exclusive peek into Elmhurst’s department stores like The Elm, Ruby’s, and Olswang’s.

In addition to the main exhibition, the museum has curated a lineup of special programs and events running through January 2024. Whether you’re a history buff eager to attend Leslie Goddard’s lecture on Chicagoland Department Stores on Oct. 22, or you’re looking to hone your gift-wrapping skills with a workshop on Nov. 18, there’s something for everyone.

The Elmhurst History Museum is open Sunday and Tuesday through Friday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
