Discover Raúl Ortiz: More is More

There’s still time to catch Raúl Ortiz: More is More, the current exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Ortiz is a Chicago-based artist whose work contrasts with the simplified modernist “less is more” design philosophy of Mies van der Rohe. Ortiz’s work uses patterns, forms and color to create many-layered, textured paintings. His art incorporates ethnographic shapes, line, botanical motifs and architecture. More is More, which runs through Aug. 14, 2022, features 13 provocative paintings that will delight viewers. “As an active printmaker for over ten years, my current paintings reflect the practice (in printmaking) of layering, obliterating and gradually focusing/refining a final image. Shooting hundreds of isolated compositions on walks around town these images inform, and often-times unravel the images that spring out of the canvases as I add to and peel away layers of paint.”

Ortiz’s family moved to Chicago’s Little Village from Guanajuato, Mexico, the hometown of artist Diego Rivera. He studied photography at Columbia College, later transferring to the University of Illinois at Chicago, receiving a BFA in Painting and Printmaking. Ortiz has exhibited work in places such as the Evanston Art Center, University Club of Chicago, National Museum of Mexican Art, Wright Museum of Art, and Rockford Art Museum, to name a few. His artwork is part of many public and private collections throughout the country. Ortiz was an artist-in-residence at The Cliff Dwellers Chicago in 2005.
