Eat Your Heart Out at the Elmhurst History Museum

If you’d like to learn more about the delicious mainstays of our region, visit Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods, an exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum which runs through Oct. 2, 2022. The exhibit will explore the origins of iconic dishes such as Chicago pizza, hot dogs and Italian beef.

When you visit Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods, you’ll discover the history of some of Chicago’s most cherished foods and the restaurateurs and establishments that helped make these dishes famous. Learn about the origins of the famous five-layered rainbow cone. Children can play at the exhibit’s interactive food service station, and participants can vote for their favorite iconic Chicago food.

Here’s a sampling of the foods you’ll learn about at Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods.

• Pizza: Chicagoland residents know the area’s deep-dish pizza is the best in the country. Its thick crust, tomato sauce, and substantial cheese layer make it a local favorite.
• Hot Dogs: Chicago-style hot dogs include a Vienna beef hot dog bathed in water on a steamed poppyseed bun. Add toppings like mustard, spicy sport peppers, green relish, chopped white onions, tomato slices, a dill pickle spear and celery salt, and you have the country’s best hot dog.
• Italian Beef: The Italian beef Chicago sandwich starts with seasoned roast beef sliced thin on an Italian roll. Don’t forget the peppers and au jus sauce.
