• Richard Strauss, Four Last Songs: As one of the final works of Strauss, Four Last Songs is imbued with a deep sense of introspection and serene acceptance. • Edward Elgar, Variations on an Original Theme (“Enigma Variations”): A cornerstone of British symphonic music, Elgar’s Enigma Variations offers a series of musical sketches that portray his friends, including his wife, Alice. The “enigma” in the title refers to a larger theme, which Elgar never revealed, leading to much speculation and intrigue. Each variation paints a vivid picture, characterizing Elgar’s acquaintances with affection, humor, and depth.
