Engaging Frida

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild is sponsoring Engaging Frida, an exhibit of Frida Kahlo-inspired artwork by local artists, from now until Aug. 21, 2021. This juried event will be held in the Elmhurst Art Museum’s EAG Gallery and feature 45 pieces of art in a variety of mediums. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we support the work of our community artists, and we can’t wait to attend this inspiring event.

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City on July 6, 1907. At the age of 18, she was severely injured in a bus crash and began painting from her recovery bed. Her brightly colored paintings, which were often self-portraits, explored numerous complex themes, including gender, identity, class, race, feminism and chronic pain.

Kahlo was married to fellow artist Diego Rivera, and her artwork was exhibited in Paris, New York City and Mexico during her lifetime. She died on July 13, 1954. However, Kahlo remained relatively unknown until her paintings were rediscovered by art historians and political activists in the 1970s. She is now considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

A free opening reception for Engaging Frida will be held in the EAG Gallery on July 16, 2021, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. During this event, special guests will talk about Kahlo’s artwork, traditional clothing and hometown. Abstract artist Heidi Becker will act as guest judge and hand out awards at 8 p.m. Tacos, tamales, beer and wine will be served.

Date and Time:
Engaging Frida runs from now through Aug. 21, 2021, during regular museum hours. The opening reception is scheduled for July 16, 2021, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
