July 5th, 2021 by

The Elmhurst Park District invites you to the free Movies in the Park on Friday, July 9, 2021. Families can watch the classic film “The Goonies” in Wilder Park. The movie begins at dusk. Come early and bring food along. Don’t forget your picnic blanket! All of us at McGrath Elmhurst Toyota enjoy the annual Movies in the Park tradition, and we hope to see you there!

Movies in the Park“The Goonies” was released in 1985. The film was directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Chris Columbus. It was based on a story by Steven Spielberg. “The Goonies” follows the exploits of a group of young misfits who discover an old treasure map and set off to find the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. They must escape from a family of criminals who also want the treasure. The film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton.

Here are a few bits of Goonies trivia:

  • Sean Astin was allowed to keep the treasure map from the movie. Years later, his mother, Patty Duke, found it. She didn’t think it was anything important and threw it away.
  • The mayor of Astoria, Oregon, the city where the movie was filmed, declared June 7 Goonies Day during the film’s 25th-anniversary celebration in 2010.
  • All the shots of the pirate ship were filmed in an actual ship that was built for the movie. When filming ended, it was offered to anyone who wanted it. There were no takers, so the ship was scrapped.

There’s something magical about seeing movies under the stars on a summer evening. So, join your friends and neighbors at Wilder Park for some good, old-fashioned fun.
