Enjoy Music at Bethel’s Trout Quintet

February 26th, 2021 by

Join Elmhurst’s Bethel United Church of Christ as they present the music of Franz Schubert in a live streaming event on Sunday, March 14 at 4 p.m. The performance is part of the church’s Music at Bethel Concert Series. The concert will showcase Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, also known as “The Trout.” At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we appreciate our community’s rich cultural heritage. This should be an outstanding performance.

Trout QuintetWritten for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, the theme of the fourth movement is taken from one of Schubert’s lieder, Die Forelle (The Trout). It has remained a favorite in the chamber music repertoire among musicians and audiences. Performers include Jennifer Leckie (violin) Terri Van Valkinburgh, (viola), Timothy Archbold (cello), Andy Anderson (double bass) and Jeffrey Panko (piano).

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer who produced a large body of work during his short lifetime. His oeuvre included more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, operas, religious music, piano music and chamber music. Schubert composed the Trout Quintet in 1819 at the age of 22. However, it wasn’t published until 1829, a year after his death.

Pianist Jeffrey Panko serves as Minister of Music and Artistic Director of the Monday Evening Concert Series for Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst, and he is the Piano Faculty Coordinator at New Music School in Chicago. He has earned top prize awards in competitions, including the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition in New York and the Society of American Musician’s Piano Competition in Chicago.
