Jazz returns to the Music at Bethel concert series on Saturday, May 7, 2022, with the Alyssa Allgood Quartet. This event will be held at the sanctuary in the Bethel United Church of Christ. All of us here at Elmhurst BMW are impressed with the level of the music provided by the Music at Bethel concert series, and we’re sure the Alyssa Allgood Quartet will play a memorable set. Alyssa Allgood QuartetAllgood’s singing style is reminiscent of great jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter. In a recent review, C. Michael Baily wrote: “Her tone, delivery, and performance have been honed to a fine and nuanced point. Vocally, Allgood is capable of impressive melodic expression and tautly muscular vocalese/scatting, often in the same song.” DownBeat Magazine called Allgood an “impressive bop-oriented singer,” and The New York City Jazz Record referred to her as “an emerging talent of considerable strength.”

She has performed at venues including The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, Merriman’s Playhouse, Fitzgerald’s Nightclub, The Whiskey Lounge and The Taste of Chicago. Allgood won the first Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition in 2017. She was named Best Jazz Entertainer two years later at the Chicago Music Awards.

“Out of the Blue,” Allgood’s debut album, was released in 2016 to critical acclaim, particularly for her consummate instrumental and scat singing style. Her next album, “Exactly Like You,” was released on Cellar Live Records in 2018. Chicago Jazz Magazine called it “the vocal record of the year.” Her latest release, 2021’s “What Tomorrow Brings,” combines original compositions with interpretations of classic songs.
