Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design is a family-friendly exhibit taking place at the Elmhurst Art Museum through Aug. 14, 2022. The show features multiple interactive learning stations that encourage exploration of the ways nature’s designs can inspire us. It investigates biomimicry and how it can assist us in innovating through art and design. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we believe in the Elmhurst Art Museum’s mission to educate and entertain. Nature's BlueprintsBiomimicry is the examination of nature to discover how it has solved design challenges. Nature’s Blueprints features a dozen sensory stations that utilize sound, touch, and interactive games to examine how nature has influenced art and design. Examples include the way Velcro was developed by studying burrs, how an inventor created a better chainsaw after studying a beetle’s teeth, how early flight tests were informed by the shape of bird and bat wings, and how suspension bridges were inspired by spiderwebs.

Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design features an installation by Chicago architect Alicia Ponce, founder and principal of the firm APMonarch. It shows how she designed architecture that emulated different natural forms, patterns and processes. The show is also complemented by two other museum exhibitions: the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Summer Members Show and a solo show by Chicago painter Raúl Ortiz in McCormick House. Ortiz is an artist whose work is inspired by line, architectural elements, color, pattern and nature.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Explore Elmhurst Grant Program and The Driskill Foundation.
