Enjoy Chicagoland’s stunning array of public art with Chicago’s Newest Murals: Communities, Celebrities, and Whimsical Characters, a virtual event hosted by the Elmhurst Public Library on June 24 at 7 p.m. During this presentation, historian Beth Sair will take you on a tour of Chicago’s extensive mural displays, sharing fascinating details about the city’s history, neighborhoods, and artists along the way. Murals are works of art painted on the interior or exterior of building walls for public enjoyment. This art form dates back to prehistoric times, with the earliest examples found in cave paintings from around 30,000 B.C. Early murals have also been found in Egyptian tombs and on the walls of Pompeii. Italian artists improved mural techniques during the Middle Ages, laying the groundwork for the art form’s transition into the modern era. In the 20th century, Mexican artists like Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and José Orozco took mural painting to new heights.

Chicago’s modern mural landscape was greatly influenced by The Wall of Respect, a 1967 artwork depicting heroes and heroines of African American history. The iconic piece inspired hundreds of Chicagoland painters to create community murals over the next 50 years. The Mural Movement, launched by Vault Gallerie owner Delilah Martinez in 2020, promises to have a similar impact on the city. The project features a series of murals with messages of racial empowerment, social justice and community harmony.
