Fly Me to the Moon: The Music of Vince Guaraldi

The Elmhurst History Museum presents Fly Me to the Moon: The Music of Vince Guaraldi on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, at 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. During these two outdoor concerts, professional Chicago jazz musicians Chris White and Sean Jacobi will play some of Guaraldi’s most memorable tunes, including his compositions for the “Peanuts” animated TV specials. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we think this will be a fun program, and we’re glad the museum is offering this event to the community.

Vince Guaraldi was an innovative jazz musician whose music became synonymous with Charles M. Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip characters. Beginning with “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in 1964, his piano style accompanied the animated adventures of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Snoopy through 12 “Peanuts” TV specials. His most popular songs for the series included unofficial “Peanuts” theme “Linus and Lucy,” melancholy holiday standard “Christmas Time is Here,” wistful Halloween tune “The Great Pumpkin Waltz,” and a soulful adaptation of Bart Howard’s jazz classic “Fly Me to the Moon.” Guaraldi won a Grammy for Best Original Jazz Composition in 1962 for his solo radio hit “Cast Your Fate to the Wind.”

Fly Me to the Moon: The Music of Vince Guaraldi is presented in connection with the Elmhurst History Museum’s current exhibit, To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA, which runs through Aug. 29. The concert will be held on the museum’s lawn, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own blanket or lawn chair. Ice cream will be available for purchase. Current CDC guidelines will be followed regarding masks and social distancing.
