Swing City Chicago invites you to come out and learn West Coast Swing dancing. Free beginner swing dancing classes take place on Saturday, Oct. 22, at noon at the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg. The classes are taught by national champions, Jesse Lopez & Ariel Peck. These lessons are geared toward absolute beginners, and you’ll have an opportunity to practice your new moves. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we think this sounds like a great opportunity to learn some new dance steps. So put on your dancing shoes and hoof it up to Schaumburg for the beginner Swing Dancing classes.

Free Beginner Swing Dancing Classes The lessons are divided into four workshops with breaks in between. No experience is necessary, and you don’t have to bring a partner. The classes are suitable for all ages.

West Coast Swing is a lead-follow partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop, a popular dance during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Dean Collins, a Los Angeles ballroom dancer and teacher, was instrumental in developing this style of swing dance on the West Coast. It became popular in the San Diego area and later in country bars in different parts of the United States.

It has an improvisational aspect, as opposed to being strictly choreographed. There isn’t one way to dance West Coast Swing; dancers develop a personal style within the dance’s basic framework. West Coast Swing isn’t limited to one type of music. It can be danced to many different musical styles, from country and blues to R&B and hip-hop.

Here’s an interesting bit of trivia: in 1988, West Coast Swing became the state dance of California.
