Help End Hunger at Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot

November 4th, 2021 by

Put on your running shoes and get ready to hit the streets. Thanksgiving is the day of the 38th Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot. We at McGrath Elmhurst Toyota probably don’t need to remind you about this great event because it’s become a tradition in the city. But we do hope you’ll come out for this 5K fun run that helps feed the hungry by providing meals to those in need. All the funds raised are used right here in DuPage County.

Dan Gibbons Turkey TrotThe genesis of Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot occurred back in 1983 when Dan heard WGN radio talk show host Ed Schwartz complain that the city of Chicago was spending $300,000 on New Year’s Eve fireworks while hunger was a problem in the city. Realizing that DuPage County had a similar problem, Gibbons became active in Schwartz’s Good Neighbor Food Drive.

Gibbons and his friends decided to start a 5K race to raise money to help the hungry by providing food during the holidays. The event, named the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, took place on Thanksgiving Day of 1984. The race raised $250, which was presented to Schwartz. It became an annual event, and the Turkey Trot is now part of Elmhurst history. To date, the race has provided nearly 4 million meals to those in need and has assisted many charitable organizations.

So, come on out and join this year’s race. It’s always a good time, and you’ll feel great knowing you’re helping this worthy cause.
