Houses of Tomorrow: Solar Homes from Keck to Today

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Elmhurst Art Museum announces its spring season, which kicks off with Houses of Tomorrow: Solar Homes from Keck to Today. This exhibit runs from Feb. 5 through May 29, 2022. Houses of Tomorrow is the season’s initial offering, centered around its architecture theme. House of TomorrowGeorge Fred Keck designed America’s first glass house for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Keck broke new ground with his House of Tomorrow, which he created more than 15 years before modernists such as Mies van der Rohe popularized steel and glass buildings. Keck and his brother William built hundreds of homes throughout the Midwest, using the novel concept of passive solar energy and construction techniques that pre-date modern sustainable building methods.

Attendees at the 1933 World’s Fair were enthralled by the futuristic vision offered by the glass House of Tomorrow. The house offered a glimpse of new technology, including the first General Electric dishwasher and even a personal airplane hangar. The solar energy breakthroughs demonstrated in the House of Tomorrow led the Keck brothers to make even more discoveries.

The Houses of Tomorrow: Solar Homes from Keck to Today exhibition focuses on the structure’s use of solar energy. Visitors can also visit a special gallery devoted to depictions of the Keck brothers’ mid-century solar houses, view a project by artist Jan Tichy centered on glass and light, and discover the winning designs from a 2021 passive solar energy competition.
