How the World Arrived on Lake Michigan’s Shores

Since the early days of the Algonquian-speaking tribes, Chicago has been a beacon of hope. People from far and wide were driven here by conflict, poverty, overturned governments, and economic hardship. On Jan. 29, Sam Mitrani presents a talk at the Elmhurst History Museum Education Center entitled: How the World Arrived on Lake Michigan’s Shores. Immigration has profoundly impacted the culture and economy of the Chicago area. The city began welcoming immigrants in the mid-1800s, starting with German and Irish immigrants. Later, immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, Asia, and Latin America came looking for economic opportunity.

Chicago is now home to a diverse population with a variety of cultural backgrounds, languages, and cuisines. This has formed a tapestry of cultures that energizes the city. Immigrants bring a range of abilities and expertise, boosting the city’s economy and creating a hub of innovation and business growth. Immigration has truly transformed the Chicago area.

Sam Mitrani is a College of DuPage Professor of History, author, and public speaker. His professional career is dedicated to researching and sharing the history of Chicago and its immigrants. Through lectures, books, and other public appearances, Mitrani brings the past to life. He’s passionate about helping others learn about the city’s unique history and how immigrants have shaped and been shaped by it.
