Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life

Join Kim Sigafus McIver as she presents Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life. Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life will take you through the history of the tribes that once lived in Illinois. Using storytelling, song and drumming, McIver will explore the thriving Native American traditions and culture that existed before the Indian Removal Act.

The Ojibwe people are located in the Northern Plains of the United States, the northern Midwest, and southern Canada. They are one of the largest North American tribal populations. The Ojibwe are known for their birch bark canoes, birch bark scrolls, cultivation of wild rice, and mining and trading of copper.

Ojibwe lands were colonized by the United States, Canada and European countries. They signed treaties with the settlers to relinquish land in exchange for land reserves, compensation, and guarantees of traditional rights. While they have been removed from their homeland, their culture has been passed down through oral traditions.

Kim Sigafus McIver is an award-winning Ojibwa author and speaker. She has been published in genres that include young adult fiction and Native American children’s picture books. She regularly travels throughout the Midwest, presenting educational programs on Native American history and culture.
