Judy Garland: A Centennial CelebrationJudy Garland (born Frances Ethel Gumm) was born in 1922. She received accolades for her many stage and screen roles. However, she’s most widely known for her role as Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz.” Garland achieved stardom for her dramatic and musical film roles, as a recording artist, and for her live concert performances. She received an Academy Juvenile Award, a Special Tony Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Her 1961 live album, “Judy at Carnegie Hall,” won her a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making her the first woman to receive the award.

Garland performed in vaudeville as a child, along with her two sisters, in an act called The Gumm Sisters. This led to movie roles with MGM, where she appeared in many films, including partnering with Mickey Rooney and Gene Kelly. She remained under contract with MGM for 15 years.

Later in her career, Garland was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Actress for “A Star is Born” in 1954 and “Judgment at Nuremberg” in 1961. At age 39, she became the youngest female recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in the film industry.

Garland died in 1969 at age 47. She received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
