Learn About the Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst

Join Dan Lund as he leads The Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst, a virtual talk presented by the Elmhurst History Museum. This free pre-recorded presentation will be accessible from Feb. 11 through May 2, 2021. The presentation focuses on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the federal program created during the New Deal era to offer young men work. The emphasis will be on projects located in our community, such as Camp Elmhurst, which was in operation in the mid-1930s. The CCC helped America recover from the Great Depression. Established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 as part of his New Deal Program, the CCC provided single men between the ages of 18 and 25 an opportunity to work while helping to improve our nation’s forests, public lands and parks.

For many men, the prospect of three meals and a bed was reason enough to join the CCC. The pay was $30 a month, although a portion of the earnings was sent directly to their families. Another bonus was the opportunity to further their education. Many men received their high school diploma while serving in the CCC.

Dan Lund, the presenter of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst, has been Curator of Collections at the Elmhurst History Museum since 2017. He curates and manages a collection of more than 20,000 artifacts, photographs and important historical objects. Lund provides reference services to the community and contributes to the museum’s numerous exhibits.
