Lyric Opera Lecture: Carmen

“Carmen” is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. It was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875. The libretto, written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, is based on the novella “Carmen” by Prosper Mérimée.

The story follows the turbulent relationship between Don José, a soldier, and Carmen, a fiery and independent-minded gypsy. The opera features lively and memorable melodies, richly drawn characters, and vivid portrayal of Spanish culture and society.

Widely considered one of the greatest operas of all time, the popularity of “Carmen” has endured for over a century. The opera’s themes of passion, jealousy, and betrayal continue to resonate with audiences. Music from the opera has been used in countless films, television shows, and commercials. Some of its most famous arias and duets include “Habanera,” “Toreador Song,” and “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée.”

Georges Bizet was a French composer who lived from 1838 to 1875. He was a child prodigy who began composing at a very young age. Bizet studied at the Paris Conservatory, winning numerous prizes for his compositions. Despite his talent, he struggled to achieve success as a composer during his lifetime. Many of his works weren’t well-received, and the premiere of “Carmen” was met with mixed reviews. Sadly, Bizet died of a heart attack three months after the premiere, at age 36, never knowing  how popular and beloved his opera would eventually become.
