Lyric Opera Lecture: Hansel and Gretel

Opera aficionados won’t want to miss the Lyric Opera Lecture: Hansel and Gretel at the Elmhurst Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023. Attendees will learn about the opera’s composer, Englelbert Humperdinck, hear the story of Hansel and Gretel, and listen to the music. Hansel and Gretel is an opera by Engelbert Humperdinck that was first performed in 1893. It’s based on the fairy tale of the same name, which was collected by the Brothers Grimm. The story follows the siblings Hansel and Gretel, who become lost in the woods and come upon a gingerbread house inhabited by a wicked witch. The witch entices the children with sweets and then tries to fatten them up in order to eat them. Hansel and Gretel outsmart the witch and escape, aided by a helpful sandman and a protective guardian angel.

Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is known for its charming music, which includes the popular aria “Evening Prayer.” The opera is written in German, but it has been translated into many other languages and is often performed in a variety of languages around the world. This timeless classic continues to delight audiences of all ages.

Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer best known for his opera Hansel and Gretel. He was born in 1854 in Siegburg, Germany, and began studying music at a young age. He later attended the Cologne Conservatory, where he studied composition and conducting. Humperdinck’s career took off in the 1890s with the success of Hansel and Gretel, which quickly became one of the most popular operas in the world. In addition to his operas, Humperdinck composed lieder, choral music, and orchestral works. He was highly regarded in his time and was praised for his skill as a composer and conductor. Humperdinck died in 1921 at the age of 67.
