Lyric Opera Lecture: Le Comte Ory

Opera lovers have a great opportunity to learn about Le Compte Ory at the Lyric Opera Lecture at the Elmhurst Public Library on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m. The talk covers the story of the opera and the life of the composer, Gioachino Rossini. Participants will also listen to music from this high-energy opera. Le Comte Ory is a comic opera. Countess Adèle has retreated to her castle while her courageous brother is off on a crusade. Count Ory is persistent in his efforts to enter the castle to win the affection of the countess. The Lyric Opera’s performance features bel canto tenor Lawrence Brownlee in the title role and coloratura soprano Kathryn Lewek as the countess.

Le Comte Ory was first performed by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier in 1828. A London performance at the King’s Theatre followed in 1829. The work has been performed at opera houses around the world. The Metropolitan Opera in New York performed the Le Comte Ory for the first time in 2011.

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was an Italian composer best known for his 39 operas. He was born in Pesaro to musician parents. Rossini elevated serious and comic opera to new heights. He stopped writing large-scale compositions when he was in his thirties. Rossini’s withdrawal from opera while at the height of his popularity has never been satisfactorily explained. Some believe he may have stopped writing due to ill health. Other possible reasons include the wealth he achieved and the rise of grand opera.
