McCormick House: From the Collection

There’s still time to explore art, architecture and history at McCormick House: From the Collection, an exhibit hosted by the Elmhurst Art Museum. This display, which runs through September 26, provides you with the opportunity to learn more about the museum’s iconic McCormick House. It features classic mid-20th century furnishings, historic photographs, and works by Midwestern artists from the museum’s permanent collection. In 1952, Robert Hall McCormick III asked renowned modern architect Mies van der Rohe to design a house. The resulting structure served as a home for McCormick’s family. It also served as a prototype for a proposed prefabricated housing project by McCormick’s real estate development firm. The house is one of only three single-family homes designed by Mies in the U.S.

The Elmhurst Art Museum acquired the McCormick House in the mid-1990s, making it the cornerstone of its collection. In 2016, the museum began a multi-phase renovation plan to return much of the house to its original condition. So far, workers have restored the building’s original facade and carport. In the future, the museum will convert the home’s floor plan back to its original design. It will also add finishing touches to the interior.

McCormick House: From the Collection lets you experience Mies’ cutting-edge architecture up close. As you walk through the home, you can also enjoy works by artists such as Keith Achepohl, John Dempsey, Michelle Grabner, Richard Koppe, Frank Trankina and more.

Admission:
Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors. Admission is free for students with school ID and children ages 18 and under.
