Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to Fly

August 29th, 2022 by

The Elmhurst Art Museum closes its 25th Anniversary year with Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to Fly, which runs from Sept. 9, 2022, through Jan. 15, 2023. This exhibition is the Pilsen-based street artist’s first solo museum show. Visitors can discover new work by this rising talent and learn the origin story of Sentrock’s unique Bird City Saint character, which can be found in many murals in Chicago and elsewhere. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we appreciate the talented local artists the Elmhurst Art Museum brings to our city.

Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to FlySentrock, whose real name is Joseph Perez, is a self-taught street artist. He views his colorful public murals as an expression of gratitude for his community that incorporates his Mexican American background. His signature Bird City Saint character wears a mask that he describes as a reflection of an individual’s strength and hope.

This multimedia exhibition spans several galleries and includes a new signature mural, a ten-foot-tall sculpture, paintings, works on paper, animated video projections, and a life-size birdhouse installation.

Sentrock believes it’s important to give back to the Latinx community, which he does through many mentoring and educational projects, including food and clothing drives. He’s partnered with companies and organizations such as Apple, the Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago White Sox. His murals have been commissioned by the City of Chicago, Chicago Design Museum, Chicago Public Libraries, National Geographic, Chicago Fire, and more.

Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to Fly features dedicated programming, including a conversation with the artist, family day workshops, a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and a special pop-up shop.
