The Captivating Magic of Mendelssohn

Classical music lovers are sure to enjoy the Magic of Mendelssohn. This performance takes place at Bethel United Church of Christ on Sunday, March 13, 2022. Works presented include Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor and Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor. The former work was composed for piano, violin and violoncello in 1839. It was later transcribed for the flute. Today, the piece is one of the composer’s most popular chamber works. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we’re in awe of the talented musicians in Elmhurst. Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1809. Over his lifetime, he composed symphonies, piano music, concertos, organ music and chamber music. His most well-known works include the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, and the overture and incidental music for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Mendelssohn also wrote the melody for the popular Christmas carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

Mendelssohn began taking piano lessons at age six. He made his first appearance on the stage at a chamber music concert when he was nine. He composed 12 string symphonies and chamber pieces between the ages of 12 and 14. His first published work came at age 13, and he wrote his first symphony for full orchestra at the age of 15. Mendelssohn suffered from ill health in his later years. He died in 1847 at the age of 38.

Performers the Magic of Mendelssohn will be Music at Bethel’s artistic director and pianist Jeffrey Panko, flutist Jennie Brown, and cellist Paula Kosower.
