The Freedom Machine: Women Cyclists in the Victorian Era – Elmhurst Toyota Dealer
On Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, at 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum invites you to step back in time to explore a pivotal period in history with The Freedom Machine: Women Cyclists in the Victorian Era. This talk delves into Illinois’ central role during the bicycle boom of the late 1800s, highlighting women who challenged Victorian societal expectations by taking to the streets on two wheels and advocating for dress reform and broader women’s rights. At Elmhurst Toyota, we know how lucky we are to live and work in a community with so many events and talks.
The late 19th century marked an era of rapid change and progression. Bicycles, a relatively new invention, became symbols of freedom, especially for women. Dubbed “The Freedom Machine,” the bicycle provided women with unprecedented mobility and independence, literally and metaphorically. As women donned bloomers and mounted their bikes, they not only took control of their physical mobility but also began to challenge societal constraints. This move towards biking was particularly pronounced in Illinois, where some of the country’s most talented female racers hailed from Chicago. Their racing prowess and resilience debunked prevalent myths about women’s supposed fragility.
Chris Sweet, the presenter for this enlightening event, has dedicated extensive research to uncover the stories of these trailblazing Illinois women cyclists from the 1860s to 1900. Drawing from his forthcoming book, he will present rich anecdotes, historical accounts, and visual illustrations, providing attendees a vivid portrayal of The Freedom Machine: Women Cyclists in the Victorian Era.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, cycling fan, or intrigued by women’s evolving roles through the ages, this presentation promises a blend of history, inspiration, and discovery. Don’t miss out on this journey through time, tracing the pedal strokes of the women who dared to defy norms and embrace freedom.
