To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA

Those who are old enough may remember the excitement of the race to the moon. In May of 1969, just before NASA landed the first man on the moon, Snoopy served as the ambassador for the U.S. space program. The command module of Apollo 10 was named Charlie Brown, and the lunar module was called Snoopy. Starting Friday, May 14, visitors to the Elmhurst History museum can learn about Snoopy’s role in NASA’s Manned Flight Awareness safety program at a new exhibit called To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA Charles Schulz was approached by NASA a year before the Apollo 10 launch in 1969. The space agency wanted to use Snoopy as its safety mascot. The Silver Snoopy Award program was introduced to increase the safety record of NASA employees and contractors. The award was a great success and remains a sought-after award among astronauts and NASA employees. Snoopy has continued his role as NASA’s safety mascot for more than 50 years.

At To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA, visitors can see a series of Peanuts comic strips from 1969 with NASA themes. Also on view are official NASA photographs, as well as video footage, posters, and Peanuts collectibles. Visitors to the exhibit will also learn about NASA astronauts from the Chicago area, including Eugene Cernan, who piloted the Apollo 10 lunar module.

The exhibit also includes an Astronauts Training Academy course located outdoors on the north side of the museum, where everyone can train like an astronaut. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA is a touring exhibit organized by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California.

  • Sunday, Tuesday through Friday: 1-5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
