Toyota Announces Third Generation TSS System
If you’ve ever experienced the feeling that comes with braking suddenly because the car in front of you stopped short, you know that you only have a fraction of a second to respond to prevent an accident. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to avoid a crash. Toyota developed Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which included several safety technologies to keep the driver, passengers, and pedestrians safe. With the launch of the third generation of TSS, Toyota reaffirms its commitment to road safety. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we understand how important it is for everyone to stay safe on the road, and we applaud Toyota’s continued developments in this area.
TSS was announced in 2015 and has since gone on to become the industry-leading accident prevention package. The initial version of TSS included Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB). The success of this system was instrumental in the adoption of AEB on cars, trucks and SUVs across the automotive industry.
Toyota introduced the second generation of TSS in 2018. The updated system added even more state-of-the-art technology, including the ability to detect pedestrians in low-light situations, and to detect bicyclists during the day.
Now, five years after it was first introduced, TSS is standard on the entire Toyota lineup. It should be noted that Toyota’s achievement comes well in advance of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s goal for AEB technology to be available on all vehicles by September 2022.
TSS includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection: An integrated camera and radar system that reduces the chances of a collision with the car ahead or a pedestrian. This system is available with Bicyclist Detection.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: A cruise control system that uses radar and a windshield camera to adjust the vehicle’s speed, while keeping it at a safe distance from the car ahead.
- Lane Departure Alert: Uses the windshield camera to alert the driver when the car veers out of its lane.
- Automatic High Beams: Uses the windshield camera to detect headlights and taillights of other vehicles and switches between high and low beams accordingly.
- Lane Tracing Assist: Uses the lines on the road and the cars ahead to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
- Road Sign Assist: Uses a camera to detect road signs, including stop signs, speed limit signs, yield signs and do not enter signs and displays them on the Multi-Information Display.
Toyota will continue to evolve to help prevent traffic accidents to meet its goal of a world without traffic fatalities.
