Watch A Gathering of Native American Tales

The Elmhurst Public Library invites you to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day with A Gathering of Native American Tales on Monday, Oct 11, 2021. Ojibwa elder Kim Sigafus will share her native culture with a program of Native American storytelling. The family-friendly program will include an Ojibwa creation tale and a story about the Dreamcatcher. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we’re sure this virtual YouTube  event will be interesting and educational. We hope you have a chance to catch it on YouTube.

The Ojibwa (also known as Chippewa) are one of the largest tribal populations among Native Americans. They reside in southern Canada and the northern Midwestern United States. They are the second-largest population of First Nations in Canada, exceeded by the Cree.

The Ojibwa people are part of the Council of Three Fires and the Anishinaabeg, which include the Algonquin, Nipissing, Odawa, Oji-Cree and Potawatomi. Their traditional language is Anishinaabemowin, part of the Algonquian language family.

As of 2010, there are approximately 320,000 Ojibwa people, with 170,742 living in the United States and about 160,000 living in Canada from western Quebec to eastern British Columbia.

Kim Sigafus is an internationally published award-winning Ojibwa speaker and author. Her Ojibwa name, Bekaadiziikwe, means Quiet Woman. Her newspaper and photo-journalistic work spans 10 years. Kim’s writing includes Native American children’s picture books, general fiction, Young Adult fiction, non-fiction and playwriting. She has presented Native American programs throughout the Midwest. She has also been an actor, director, lyricist and singer. In her spare time, Kim drums, sings, and makes dream catchers.
