May 3rd, 2019 by

If the thought of amusement parks brings back happy memories, you won’t want to miss Elmhurst History Museum’s new exhibit, called Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland’s Amusement Parks. The exhibit opens on May 17, 2019 and runs through August 18. Visitors to the museum will have a chance to learn about the colorful history of Chicago’s amusement parks, including The Bobs at Riverview and the first Ferris Wheel at the 1893 World’s Columbian exhibition (which is the subject of a special event on June 2). Many of us at Elmhurst Toyota are amusement park fans, and we plan on visiting this exhibit at the museum.

Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland's Amusement ParksModern amusement parks developed from European pleasure gardens, fairs and large picnic areas. Before long, world’s fairs and international expositions became popular and helped spur the development of the amusement park industry. The World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago was an early forerunner of today’s amusement park.

Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland’s Amusement Parks takes a look at Chicago destinations such as trolley parks and suburban attractions like Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom and Kiddieland. Many rare photos, videos, advertisements and memorabilia will be on hand, along with interactive displays featuring games of the day, a virtual roller coaster and a child-friendly exhibit guide.
