York Drama’s Presents The Laramie Project

Theater fans have a treat in store as York Drama presents The Laramie Project. This on-demand streaming event is available to view on March 26-28 and April 4-5, 2021. With live theatre paused, York Drama has decided to present its 2021 Winter Production as a film. The Laramie Project is a play written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project.  Developed in 2000, it addresses reactions to the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Shepard was a gay student at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard’s murder was denounced as a hate crime and drew attention to the need to establish more hate crime laws in states that didn’t have them, including Wyoming.

Presented in three acts, the play is based on interviews with the town’s residents conducted by members of the Tectonic Theater Project, as well as their journal entries and news reports published in the media. The play features more than 60 characters, played by eight actors.

The Denver Center Theatre Company first performed the Laramie Project at The Ricketson Theatre in 2000. The next performance was at New York City’s Union Square Theatre, followed by a show in Laramie, Wyoming in 2002. Since then, The Laramie Project has been performed at colleges, high schools and community theaters throughout the United States, as well as at professional playhouses throughout the world.

Noteworthy actors and actresses who have appeared in The Laramie Project include Stockard Channing, Peter Fonda, Cyndi Lauper, Judith Light, Laura Linney, Camryn Manheim and Christina Ricci.
