You’ll Love Ladies of Laughter
Join film historian Dr. Annette Bochenek as she presents Ladies of Laughter. This hybrid event takes place at the Elmhurst Public Library on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. Dr. Bochenek will talk about the careers of the funny women who appeared on radio, in film, and on television. You’ll learn about comediennes Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden and more. At McGrath Elmhurst Toyota, we’re fans of the library’s outstanding presentations. We’re sure this will be entertaining and informative.
Gracie Allen was a comedian who became well-known as the partner of her husband, George Burns. She appeared with Burns on radio, TV and film as part of the duo, Burns and Allen. Gracie received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Gracie and George Burns were inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1988.
Lucille Ball was an American actress and comedian. She won numerous awards, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award. She received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Lucy’s career began in 1929 when she became a model. She soon began working on Broadway, followed by movie roles in the 1930s and 1940s. She married Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz in November 1940. The couple created the popular sitcom “I Love Lucy” in the 1950s.
Eve Arden was an actress and comedian who appeared on radio, stage, and television. Her career began in 1929 and spanned nearly six decades. She appeared in films such as “Stage Door,” “Having a Wonderful Time,” and the Marx Brothers’ “At the Circus.” Eve was nominated for an academy award for best supporting actress for her role in “Mildred Pierce.” She won a Primetime Emmy Award for the TV show “Our Miss Brooks.”
Annette Bochenek, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Purdue University. She’s an archivist and film historian of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Dr. Bochenek runs the Hometowns to Hollywood blog, where she writes about her travels investigating the hometowns and lives of Golden Age stars.
