Learn about Lyric Opera of Chicago’s enthralling season opener with Lyric Opera Lecture: Macbeth, a presentation by the Elmhurst Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, at 3 p.m. This in-person event will explore the story, composer and music behind Verdi’s Macbeth, the first production from Lyric’s new music director, Enrique Mazzola. In the mid-1800s, Italian composer Guiseppe Verdi adapted William Shakespeare’s Macbeth into a riveting four-act opera. His creation transformed the tragic tale of Macbeth, a Scottish general who murders his way to power with the help of his ambitious wife, into a stunning musical masterpiece.

To kick off its 2021 season, the Lyric Opera of Chicago brings Sir David McVicar’s brand-new production of Verdi’s Macbeth to the stage. Starring Russian baritone Roman Burdenko as Macbeth and Berwyn-born soprano Sondra Radvanovsky as Lady Macbeth, this unforgettable show delivers the murder, madness and mayhem of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy in grand operatic style. Packed with amazing arias, dazzling duets and exuberant ensembles, it’s the ultimate way to experience the treachery of theater’s original power couple. Songs will be sung in Italian with projected English texts. The production will run from Sept. 17 to Oct. 9, 2021, with three matinee and three evening performances.

Hosted by an opera expert, Lyric Opera Lecture: Macbeth will provide insightful background information on Shakespeare’s original story and Verdi’s adaptation. It will also give attendees a chance to listen to highlights from Macbeth’s incredible musical score.
